Andersen, Jette (1945-) - Danish runner that started out as a long jumper, but later turned to the distance events, and came in 19th in the 1964 Olympic 800m run (2.15,2). Coached by her dad, she set national records on both 400m and 800m.
Bench - A wide variety of exercise benches are available for use in doing barbell and dumbbell exercises either lying or seated. The most common type of bench, a flat exercise bench, can be used for chest, shoulder, and arm movements. Incline and decline benches (which are set at various angles, normally between 30 to 45 degrees) also allow movements for the chest, shoulders, and arms. Adjustable benches are available for home gym use. They can be adjusted to flat, incline or decline angles.
Bodybuilding - A type of weight training applied in con-junction with sound nutritional practices to alter the shape or form of one's body. In the context of this book, bodybuilding is a competitive sport nationally and inter-nationally in both amateur and professional categories for men, women, and mixed pairs. However, a majority of individuals use bodybuilding methods merely to lose excess body fat or build up a too thin part of the body.
Cellulose - indigestible carbohydrate; provides fiber in the diet
Ebert, Julius (1898-1993) - Finished 35th in the 1920 Olympic 8K Cross Country race, and was on the Danish team that finished 7th.
Edelen, Leonard G. "Buddy" - Former world record holder in the marathon (Britain's Polytechnic Marathon, 1963, 2:14.28,8), and the first American to go under 2:20. At the University of Minnesota, Edelen won Big Ten titles in cross country and track, but achieved his greatest fame after moving to England to train. Edelen trained in England and received his coaching advice from Fred Wilt via mail. He won the 1964 Olympic Trials on the notoriously hot, hilly Yonkers, New York course.
Isometric Contraction - Isometric contraction is a muscular contraction not accompanied by movement of the joint. The muscle is neither lengthened nor shortened but tension changes can be measured. Due to the lack of visible muscle shortening, there is no movement of the actins. The term "dynamic tension" was used by Charles Atlas to refer to this term.
Pumping Iron - Phrase that has been in use since the 1950s, but recently greatly popularized. Lifting weights.
Routine - Also called a training schedule or program, a routine is the total list of exercises, sets, and reps (and sometimes weights) used in one training session.
Sleeve - The hollow metal tube that fits over the bar on most exercise barbell and dumbbell sets. This sleeve makes it easier for the bar to rotate in your hands as you perform an exercise.
Training Effect - Increase in functional capacity of muscles as result of increased (overload) placed upon them.
