Further Exercise facts:

Burns - A training technique used to push a set past the normal failure point, and thereby to stimulate it to greater hypertrophy. Burns consist of short, quick, bouncy reps 4-6 inches in range of motion. Most bodybuilders do 8-12 burns at the end of a set that has already been taken to failure. They generate terrific burn in the muscles, hence the name of this technique.

Cardiac Muscle - A special type of striated muscle of the heart. Cardiac muscle is an exception among involuntary muscles, which are characteristically smooth. Its contractile fibers resemble those of skeletal muscles but are not as large in diameter. The connective tissue of cardiac muscle is sparser than that of skeletal muscle.

Delts - Abbreviation for deltoids, the large triangular muscles of the shoulder that raise the arm away from the body and perform other functions.

Dwyer, Fred - Marty Liquori's high school coach.

Eccentric Contraction - When a given resistance overcomes the muscle tension so that the muscle actually lengthens the muscle is said to be in eccentric contraction. Although the contracting muscle develops tension, it is overpowered by resistance. When you slowly lower a curled weight from the shoulder, the biceps muscle contracts eccentrically. If the biceps was relaxed, gravity would extend the elbow joint and lower the weight with considerable speed. Slowing the movement against resistance provides an additional muscle - developing factor.

Liquori, Marty - One of only three (and the last) high school runners to break four minutes for the mile, Marty Liquori attended Villanova University where he was coached by the late Hall of Famer Jumbo Elliott. While running for the Wildcats, he won three consecutive Ncaa mile run titles (1969-71), also capturing the Aau mile run titles in 1969 and 1970. Won the famous "Dream Mile" against Jim Ryun at Franklin Field in 1972.

Lower Abs - Abbreviation for abdominal muscles below the navel. Max- Maximum effort for one repetition of an exercise.

Moore, Kenny - Like Kardong, a man who has given much to the sport of running at several different levels. A two-time Olympic marathoner (1968 and 1972), the former University of Oregon runner placed fourth in the Munich Games. Many of his articles written for "Sports Illustrated" over the years are regarded as some of the best ever on running. Moore appeared in the 1982 movie "Personal Best".

Pereira, Mario Moniz - Coach of Carlos Lopes.

Set - Group of reps (lifting and lowering a weight) of an exercise after which you take a brief rest period. For example, if you complete 10 reps, set the weight down, complete eight more reps, set the weight down again, and repeat for six more reps, you have completed three sets of the exercise.

Slow Twitch Muscle Fibers - Red muscle fibers that contract slowly, weakly, and continually for long periods of time. Slow - twitch fibers are developed by light, high - rep weight workouts.

Working Set - The set(s) you perform after finishing a warm up or stretching.
