Catabolic - Chemical reactions in the body where larger units are broken down into smaller subunits. As an example, muscle tissue may be broken down into protein strands which, in turn, may be cleaved into individual amino acids.
Concentric - The lifting phase of an exercise, when the muscle shortens or contracts. For example, When you lift the weight in a bench press, press-ing it from your chest to the lock-out position, that's the concentric, or "positive," phase of the exercise.
Fat Cell Theory - belief that fat cells have a natural drive to regain any weigh lost
Galloway, Jeff - Born in Raleigh, North Carolina, Jeff started running in high school and was state champion on the 2-mile. He attended Weslyan University and was All-American in Cross Country and track. He made it to the 1972 Olympic Games in the 10,000m. In 1973 he set an American record in the 10-mile and represented the U.S. as a member of the U.S. National Track and Field Team in Europe, Russia and Africa.
Giant Sets - Series of 4-6 exercises done with little or no rest between movements and a rest interval of 3-4 minutes between giant sets. You can perform giant sets for either two antagonistic muscle groups or a single body part.
High-density lipoprotein (HDLs) - lipoproteins that carry cholesterol from cells to the liver for eventual excretion
Hypermetabolic - higher than normal rate of metabolism
Isometric Contraction - Isometric contraction is a muscular contraction not accompanied by movement of the joint. The muscle is neither lengthened nor shortened but tension changes can be measured. Due to the lack of visible muscle shortening, there is no movement of the actins. The term "dynamic tension" was used by Charles Atlas to refer to this term.
Juantorena, Alberto (1950-) - Cuban athlete. Won Olympic gold's at Montreal in both the 400m and 800m.
Poulsen, Aage (1919-) - Started out as a boxer, and ended up as an record holder on the 1500m in 3.51,0. This gave a ticket to the 1948 Olympics, where the heat stroke him on the 5000m and he could not finish the race. Won several national titles throughout time on the 1500m, 2000m and 5000m.
Weightlifting - The competitive form of weight training in which each athlete attempts to lift as much as he can in well-defined exercises. Olympic lifting and power lifting are the two types of weightlifting competition.
